Microtubules: A Ring for the Depolymerization Motor
نویسنده
چکیده
Newly discovered rings around microtubules, assembled from the Dam1 protein complex, may provide the dynamic linkage at microtubule ends for force generation coupled to microtubule depolymerization and polymerization.

Modified Couple Stress Theory for Vibration of Embedded Bioliquid-Filled Microtubules under Walking a Motor Protein Including Surface Effects
Microtubules (MTs) are fibrous and tube-like cell substructures exist in cytoplasm of cells which play a vital role in many cellular processes. Surface effects on the vibration of bioliquid MTs surrounded by cytoplasm is investigated in this study. The emphasis is placed on the effect of the motor protein motion on the MTs. The MT is modeled as an orthotropic beam and the surrounded cytoplasm i...
متن کاملTubulin depolymerization may be an ancient biological motor.
The motions of mitotic chromosomes are complex and show considerable variety across species. A wealth of evidence supports the idea that microtubule-dependent motor enzymes contribute to this variation and are important both for spindle formation and for the accurate completion of chromosome segregation. Motors that walk towards the spindle pole are, however, dispensable for at least some polew...
متن کاملKinesin-13s form rings around microtubules
Kinesin is a superfamily of motor proteins that uses the energy of adenosine triphosphate hydrolysis to move and generate force along microtubules. A notable exception to this general description is found in the kinesin-13 family that actively depolymerizes microtubules rather than actively moving along them. This depolymerization activity is important in mitosis during chromosome segregation. ...
متن کاملThe kinesin-13 MCAK has an unconventional ATPase cycle adapted for microtubule depolymerization
Unlike other kinesins, members of the kinesin-13 subfamily do not move directionally along microtubules but, instead, depolymerize them. To understand how kinesins with structurally similar motor domains can have such dissimilar functions, we elucidated the ATP turnover cycle of the kinesin-13, MCAK. In contrast to translocating kinesins, ATP cleavage, rather than product release, is the rate-l...
متن کاملCrowding of molecular motors determines microtubule depolymerization.
The assembly and disassembly dynamics of microtubules (MTs) is tightly controlled by MT-associated proteins. Here, we investigate how plus-end-directed depolymerases of the kinesin-8 family regulate MT depolymerization dynamics. Using an individual-based model, we reproduce experimental findings. Moreover, crowding is identified as the key regulatory mechanism of depolymerization dynamics. Our ...
